Toilet bowl: scrubbed. Mirror: wiped. Shower: spotless.

Cleaning the bathroom can be pretty routine, but there might be some items you’re forgetting when doing the rounds—your haircare tools.

That’s right, tools like hairbrushes, curling wands and flat irons also need to be cleaned. Dust, dry shampoo and other haircare products build up on these items over time. That also means you’re putting that stuff back in your hair every time you use these tools.

Before cleaning your styling tools, make sure they’re unplugged and completely cool.

Watch this video to see how to clean your hair straightener and curling iron.

How to clean flat iron, curling iron

A cotton ball or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol is the easiest way to clean your flat iron or curling iron.

Gently wipe the plates until they’re clean. Then, wipe down the iron with a warm, damp cloth.

If you need a deeper clean to remove hairspray or other gunk stuck on the plates, mix two parts baking soda with four parts water until it becomes a paste. Apply the paste to the styling tool and gently scrub it with an old toothbrush or a cotton pad.

Wipe the paste off with a kitchen towel and the plates should be clean. If not, repeat as needed.

How to clean hair dryer

Have you ever dried your hair and it smelled like something was burning? That could be due to a buildup of dust, dirt and lint on the filter. Regularly cleaning the filter on your blow dryer can help prevent that unpleasant smell from happening.

Many hairdryers have a removable piece on the backside that houses the filter. Remove this and take out the filter. Shake off any loose debris, then give it a rinse.

Let the filter dry completely before putting it back in and using the blow dryer again.

If you’re unsure how to open yours or where the filter is on your specific tool, try searching for the user manual or model-specific tutorials online.
