Why You Should Know Coping strategies for dealing with loneliness

Nobody wants to feel lonely or deal with loneliness, yet it’s a reality we all must accept quite often these days. This mental health issue is getting more common as more people talk about it.

5 Symptoms of Loneliness

  1. Sad and Passive: Feeling sad is one thing, but when you feel sad and constantly feel bad for yourself, enough that you don’t want to do anything, you know you’re exhibiting one of the symptoms.
  2. Solitude: You may or may not realize that this is a symptom, but you will notice when you slowly don’t hear much from your parents, friends, colleagues, or even partners.
  3. Depression: This symptom is often confused with feeling sad, but severe depression can cause you unable to move out of bed.
  4. Impulse Buy: Many people don’t realize how purchasing things they don’t need counts as a symptom of loneliness since it’s a screaming effort to get people to look at you.
  5. Avoidance: You may feel like you don’t want to meet anyone and hide as soon as you hear or see others, slowly cutting ties with everyone.

How to Overcome Loneliness

  • Reconnect: While you may feel weird because you’re feeling misunderstood, you should try to reach out and reconnect with people you love.
  • Do things you like: Having one or several hobbies can help you overcome loneliness, as you will always have things to do and be busy in a good way.
  • Join a community: Picking up a new community that is in line with what you like is always a good idea, as long as you’re committed to giving your minimum participation at the very least.
  • Self-Care Check: Every once in a while, you can do a self-care check that will tell you if you’re feeling depressed or other loneliness symptoms so you can immediately alleviate them.
  • Dominated by Pain: Sometimes, mental health issues like loneliness also can affect your physics and cause issues like chest pain, shortness of breath, and many more.
  • Therapy: Choose a therapy that you will love and are committed to pull you out from the dark depression corner.

  • Letter to Self: Do not overthink this task, as you just need to focus on writing what you feel and experience the whole week in a letter, which you will keep and read at a later day.
  • Journaling:  If a letter is not your forte, you can keep your thoughts in a journal that you can embellish with dried flowers or other items.
  • Take Your Time: Your path to recovery is unique only for you, therefore you should focus on what you can do to feel better.
